Political Philosophies

Overview
Political Philosophies Spectrum Ideologies that drive revolutions, governance, and social structures. Explores spectrum from Liberalism (Liberty) to Socialism (Equality) to Fascism (Total Power).
1. Liberalism, Socialism & Marxism
Liberalism Principles Individual liberty, rule of law, private property, toleration, consent of governed. Reflected in India's Fundamental Rights (Part III).
Liberal Thinkers John Locke (natural rights to life, liberty, property), Adam Smith (laissez-faire capitalism), Montesquieu (separation of powers). John Rawls introduced "Veil of Ignorance" for designing a just society.
Liberalism Evolution Classical Liberalism advocates for "minimal state" (negative liberty), whereas Modern Liberalism supports "welfare state" (positive liberty to enable human development).
Socialism Advocates public/state ownership of means of production to reduce economic inequality. Reflected in India's DPSP (Part IV) and Preamble ("Socialist" added by 42nd Amendment). India's model is Democratic Socialism (mixed economy) rather than state communism.
Fabian Socialism Originating in Britain, advocates achieving socialism through gradual, democratic, parliamentary reforms rather than violent revolution. Deeply influenced Jawaharlal Nehru and early planning.
Marxism Formulated by Karl Marx. Core ideas include Class Struggle (bourgeoisie vs. proletariat) and Historical Materialism (economic base determines ideological/legal superstructure). Contrary to Marx's prediction, revolutions occurred in agrarian societies (Russia, China) rather than industrialized ones.
Maoism Variant of Marxism-Leninism adapted by Mao Zedong for agrarian societies, emphasizing peasant-led guerrilla warfare. Influences Naxalite movement in India.
2. Fascism & Nationalism
Fascism Tenets Totalitarian, far-right political ideology founded by Benito Mussolini in Italy and adopted by Adolf Hitler (Nazism) in Germany. Extreme militaristic nationalism, rejection of democracy, liberalism, and Marxism, total subordination of individual to state ("Everything within the State, nothing against the State"), and glorification of war.
Nazism Variant Specific form of fascism incorporating pseudo-scientific racial supremacy (Aryan superiority), anti-Semitism, and concept of Lebensraum (seeking living space through territorial expansion).
Civic Nationalism Based on political values, constitutional principles, and shared citizenship, regardless of ethnicity or race.
Ethnic Nationalism Based on ancestry, common language, and shared cultural heritage.
Indian Nationalism Composite civic nationalism born out of anti-colonial struggle, uniting diverse regions and ethnicities. Influenced by Giuseppe Mazzini's ideas of liberal nationalism.
