🐅 50 Years of Project Tiger — PM Launches IBCA (Origin) 2023

Event: On 9 April 2023, PM Modi inaugurated "Commemoration of 50 Years of Project Tiger" at Mysuru University, Karnataka, and launched the International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA) — this is the origin/launch announcement; the Union Cabinet formally approved IBCA's establishment later, on 29 February 2024 (see entry below).
Tiger Numbers: Declared India's tiger population at 3,167 (per the 5th cycle All India Tiger Estimation); released a summary report of the 5th cycle Management Effectiveness Evaluation of Tiger Reserves.

🐆 International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA) — Cabinet Approval 2024

Approval: Union Cabinet approved establishment of the International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA) on 29 February 2024 — headquartered in India, with ₹150 crore one-time budgetary support over 5 years (2023-24 to 2027-28).
Origin: PM called for the alliance on Global Tiger Day 2019; formally launched it on 9 April 2023 (marking 50 years of Project Tiger — see entry above for details of that event).
Composition: A multi-country, multi-agency coalition of 96 big cat range/non-range countries, plus conservation partners, scientific organizations, and corporates.
Species Coverage: Covers 7 big cat species globally — Tiger, Lion, Leopard, Snow Leopard, Puma, Jaguar, Cheetah — of which 5 are found in India (Tiger, Lion, Leopard, Snow Leopard, Cheetah).
Governance: Assembly of Members, Standing Committee, and Secretariat (HQ in India) — modeled on the International Solar Alliance (ISA) framework.

🦋 Fauna of India Checklist Portal — First Country to Checklist Its Entire Fauna 2024

Launch: India became the first country in the world to prepare a complete checklist of its entire fauna, launched as the "Fauna of India Checklist Portal" by Union Minister Bhupender Yadav on 26/30 June 2024, on the 109th Foundation Day of the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) in Kolkata.
Coverage: Covers 104,561 species, comprising 121 checklists across 36 phyla, including endemic, threatened, and scheduled species — India's first comprehensive faunal document.

🌍 India's Updated NBSAP — Launched at COP16, Cali, Colombia 2024

Launch: India's updated National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP) was launched at COP16 to the Convention on Biological Diversity in Cali, Colombia (30 October/3 November 2024).
Alignment: Aligned with the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF); sets 23 national biodiversity targets.
Approach: Developed via a "Whole-of-Government" and "Whole-of-Society" approach involving 23 central Ministries.
Governance Framework: Three-tier structure under the Biological Diversity Act, 2002 (amended 2023) — National Biodiversity Authority, State Biodiversity Boards, and local Biodiversity Management Committees.

🐯 Guru Ghasidas-Tamor Pingla — India's 56th Tiger Reserve 2024

Notification: Guru Ghasidas-Tamor Pingla Tiger Reserve (Chhattisgarh) announced 18 November 2024 as India's 56th Tiger Reserve (NTCA gave final approval in October 2021).
Area: Core/critical habitat 2,049.2 sq km + Buffer 780.15 sq km = Total 2,829.38 sq km — India's 3rd largest tiger reserve after Nagarjunsagar-Srisailam (Andhra Pradesh) and Manas (Assam).
Landscape Connectivity: Forms a ~4,500 sq km landscape complex contiguous with Sanjay Dubri Tiger Reserve (MP), connected to Bandhavgarh TR (MP) and Palamau TR (Jharkhand).
State Count: Chhattisgarh now has 4 Tiger Reserves.

🐅 Ratapani — India's 57th Tiger Reserve 2024

Notification: Ratapani Tiger Reserve (Madhya Pradesh) announced 3 December 2024 as India's 57th Tiger Reserve — MP's 8th tiger reserve, located in the Ratapani/Bhopal/Sehore area.
Area: Core area 763.8 sq km + Buffer area 507.6 sq km = Total 1,271.4 sq km.
