Why is reconstructing Harappan religion methodologically difficult?Methodological Problem of Sacred vs Secular: Determining past thought and belief is complex, especially where writing is undeciphered. Indicators are mainly portable objects, figural representations, and a few settlement areas seemingly set apart for sacred purposes. Without written information it is difficult to differentiate sacred and secular activities — any or every find might have sacred content. No structures can conclusively be described as temples, nor statues as worshipped images. Unlike contemporary Egypt and Mesopotamia, Indus lacks monumental palaces despite requisite engineering knowledge — religious ceremonies, if any, may have been largely confined to individual homes or open air.
Analyse Mother Goddess / fertility evidence and counter-views (Marshall, phalli, yoni, regional absence).Female Goddesses, Fertility Cult and Counter-Views: Evidence for objects of worship comes mainly from seals and terracotta figurines. Worship of female goddesses associated with fertility has long been held a major feature. A seal showing a nude woman head downwards, legs apart, plant issuing from vagina is often interpreted as prototype of Shakambari, the Earth Mother. Large numbers of terracotta female figurines were labelled ‘Mother Goddesses’; a stone lamp from Mohenjodaro may show a mother-goddess. Importance of goddess worship in later Hinduism may reflect Harappan agricultural fertility concern. Not all female figurines necessarily represented goddesses, nor all goddesses maternal. Some may have been cultic/household-ritual; others toys or decorative. The type frequently given religious significance is a slim female with distinctive fan-shaped headdress, short skirt, heavily ornamented (necklaces, armlets, bangles, anklets, earrings), sometimes with infant; many show pregnancy. Female figurines (including possibly religious ones) are abundant at Mohenjodaro, Harappa and Banawali but not at Kalibangan, Lothal, Surkotada or Mitathal. Many broken — possibly part of short-term ritual cycle, votive offerings rather than cult images. John Marshall hypothesized Mother Goddess cult as precursor of Shaktism, but function remains unclear. Stones Marshall took as sacred phalli are now often thought pestles or game counters; ring stones thought as yoni determined as architectural pillar-stands — religious symbolism still not eliminated. At Kalibangan and Surkotada female figurines practically absent. At Mohenjodaro only 475 of total terracotta figurines/fragments were female — fertility cult not as common as often made out. Several female figurines used as lamps or for burning incense.
Describe the Pashupati / proto-Shiva seal and the main critical reservations.Male God — Pashupati / Proto-Shiva Seal: [DIAGRAM NEEDED HERE: Pashupati seal — seated horned figure flanked by animals] A male god on a steatite seal from Mohenjodaro is usually called the Pashupati seal: male figure with buffalo-horned head-dress sitting in yogic posture, flanked by elephant, rhinoceros, water buffalo and tiger; two antelopes/ibexes beneath the dais. One seal shows snakes accompanying the yogic figure.
Detail linga–yoni, tree/plant/animal cult, composite creatures, unicorn and processional animals.Lingas, Yonis, Trees, Animals, Composites and Unicorn: Worship of male and female creative energy as stone lingas and yonis (phallic stones at Mohenjodaro, Harappa, Dholavira; miniature terracotta phallic emblem in ovular form from Kalibangan). Part-human–part-animal characters and human personage on pipal tree suggest shamanistic component. Terracotta, shell, faience and metal tablets may have been amulets; Svastika motif may associate with protection/auspiciousness. What mythical-hero seals and putative temple/priest structures appear, and what is the conclusive limit?Mythical Heroes and Putative Places of Worship: Human figures with horns and long tails frequently on seals; sometimes cattle hoofs and hind legs. Mesopotamian parallels: man grappling pair of tigers recalls Gilgamesh. Some historians identify large buildings in Mohenjodaro citadel and lower town as temples, supported by large stone sculptures found there. Lower city building with monumental entrance and double stairway to raised platform held seated bearded man sculpture; another stone statue in same building.   • At Mohenjodaro, over 60 per cent of the seals have this motif, while it occurs on about 46 per cent of the seals at Harappa.
