Pollution and Population Dynamics

Pollution refers to unwanted chemical/physical changes in the environment (Air, Water, Land) that are harmful to life.

I. Types of Pollution
  1. Air Pollution: Main pollutants are , , , , , and Aerosols.
    • Acid Rain: and react with water to form Sulphuric and Nitric acid.
    • Bhopal Gas Tragedy: Leakage of Methyl Isocyanate (MIC) on 3rd December 1984 at the Union Carbide Factory.
  2. Water Pollution: Due to carbonates/sulphates of Mg and K, Ammonia, and heavy metals in sea water.
  3. Soil Pollution: Acid rain, excessive fertilizers, and industrial waste.
  4. Nuclear Pollution: Radioactive rays from Atomic reactors, nuclear weapons, and power-house waste.
II. Population Dynamics
  • Population Density: Individuals per unit area.
  • Natality: Increase in population by birth.
  • Mortality: Removal from population by death.
  • Biotic Potential: Maximum inherent capacity to reproduce.
  • Environmental Resistance: Factors checking population growth (Food, Space, Disease).
  • Demographic Transition: Zero population growth (Birth rate = Death rate).
  • Carrying Capacity (K): The maximum population size an environment can sustain indefinitely given available resources.
  • Population Growth Curves:
    • J-shaped curve: Exponential growth with unlimited resources (no environmental resistance); population grows indefinitely — rare in nature, seen briefly in colonizing/invasive species.
    • S-shaped (Sigmoid/Logistic) curve: Growth slows as resources become limiting and population stabilizes at the carrying capacity (K) — the realistic model for most natural populations.
III. Symbiotic Relationships

Functional associations between different species.

  1. Mutualism: Both species benefit (e.g., Rhizobium bacteria and legume roots).
  2. Commensalism: One species benefits; the other is neither helped nor harmed (e.g., Orchid growing on a tree).
  3. Parasitism: One species (parasite) benefits at the expense of the other (host) (e.g., Tapeworm in intestine, Cuscuta on host plant).
  4. Predation: One organism (predator) kills and consumes another (prey); regulates population size of prey species.
  5. Competition: Two species compete for the same limited resource; both are negatively affected.
  6. Amensalism: One species is harmed while the other is unaffected (e.g., Penicillium mould secreting antibiotic that kills nearby bacteria).
IV. Mental Health and Drugs
  • Psychosis: Mild mental illness with prolonged emotional reaction.
  • Drug Abuse: Usage of drugs for non-clinical purposes that impairs physical/psychological functions.
