Human Anatomy: Tissues and Muscles

Biological structure begins at the tissue level, where cells organize into functional groups.

I. Animal Tissues
  • Epithelial: Function: Covering and lining of surfaces.. Examples / Locations: Skin, intestine, nasal passage, trachea.
  • Connective: Function: Binding, structural support, and defense.. Examples / Locations: Bone, cartilage, ligament, blood (fluid connective tissue), adipose.
  • Muscular: Function: Contractility and movement.. Examples / Locations: Skeletal muscles, heart walls.
  • Nervous: Function: Sensitivity and control.. Examples / Locations: Neurons (nerve cells) and neuroglia.
I(a). Sub-types of Animal Tissues
  • Epithelial Tissue: Squamous (flat, thin — lining of blood vessels/alveoli), Cuboidal (cube-shaped — kidney tubules, glands), Columnar (tall, column-shaped — lining of intestine, often with cilia for movement).
  • Connective Tissue: Areolar (fills space between organs), Adipose (fat storage), Bone (rigid, mineralized), Cartilage (flexible, e.g., nose/ear), Blood/Lymph (fluid connective tissue), Ligament (bone-to-bone, elastic), Tendon (muscle-to-bone, less elastic).
  • Muscular Tissue: Striated/Skeletal (voluntary, attached to bones, striped appearance), Unstriated/Smooth (involuntary, spindle-shaped, e.g., gut wall, blood vessels), Cardiac (involuntary, striated, branched cells, found only in heart).
  • Nervous Tissue: Neuron structure — Cell body (Cyton), Dendrites (receive signals), Axon (transmits signals); Neuroglia provide support and protection.
II. Muscular System

Human body contains 639 muscles.

  1. Unstriped (Involuntary): Not under conscious control (e.g., Alimentary canal, blood vessels).
  2. Striped (Voluntary): Controlled by will; connected to bones via Tendons.
  3. Cardiac: Found only in heart walls; move rhythmically without failing throughout life.

  • Largest Muscle: Gluteus Maximus (Hip muscle).
  • Smallest Muscle: Stapedius (Inner ear).
III. Sub-classes of Mammals
  1. Prototheria: Egg-laying mammals (e.g., Echidna, Duck-billed Platypus).
  2. Metatheria: Immature birth (e.g., Kangaroo).
  3. Eutheria: Well-developed birth (e.g., Humans).
  • Note: The highest body temperature in mammals is found in Goats (39°C).
