Zoology: Vertebrate Classification (Chordata)

Phylum Chordata animals possess a notochord, dorsal hollow nerve cord, and paired pharyngeal gill slits.

I. Class Pisces (Fishes)
  • Life: Aquatic; Cold-blooded.
  • Heart: Two chambers (1 Auricle, 1 Ventricle); pumps impure blood.
  • Respiration: Gills.
  • Types: Cartilaginous (skeleton of cartilage, e.g., Shark/Scoliodon, Torpedo — mostly marine) vs Bony (skeleton of bone, e.g., Rohu, Hilsa — most food fishes).
  • Examples: Hippocampus (Sea horse), Scoliodon (Dogfish shark), Torpedo (Electric ray), Exocoetus (Flying fish).
II. Class Amphibia (Amphibians)
  • Life: Both land and water; Cold-blooded.
  • Heart: Three chambers (2 Auricles, 1 Ventricle).
  • Respiration: Gills, Skin, and Lungs.
  • Examples: Frog, toad, Salamander, Icthyophis (limbless amphibian).
III. Class Reptilia (Reptiles)
  • Life: Land vertebrates; Cold-blooded; Crawling.
  • Heart: Typically three chambers (Crocodile has 4).
  • Respiration: Lungs.
  • Reproduction: Eggs covered with Calcium Carbonate shells.
  • Facts:
    • Mesozoic Era: The era of reptiles.
    • Cobra: Only snake that makes nests.
    • Hydrophis: World's most poisonous sea snake.
    • Heloderma: Only poisonous lizard.
  • Examples: Lizard, Snake, Tortoise, Crocodile, Sphenodon.
IV. Class Aves (Birds)
  • Life: Warm-blooded; Flight adaptation.
  • Forelimbs: Modified into wings.
  • Heart: Four chambers.
  • Respiration: Lungs.
  • Teeth: Absent; use beak for feeding.
  • Records:
    • Flightless Birds: Kiwi and Emu.
    • Largest Alive Bird: Ostrich.
    • Smallest Bird: Humming bird.
  • Examples: Peacock, Parrot, Crow.
V. Class Mammalia (Mammals)
  • Life: Warm-blooded.
  • Heart: Four chambers.
  • Glands: Sweat and Oil glands found on skin.
  • Teeth: Come twice (Diphyodont).
  • RBCs: Non-nucleated except in Camel and Llama.
  • Skin: Covered with hair.

  • Heart Chambers: A key evolutionary marker (2 in Fish 3 in Amphibians 4 in Birds/Mammals).
  • Blood Temperature: Differentiating between Poikilothermic (Cold-blooded) and Homoiothermic (Warm-blooded).

VI. Confused Pairs — Common Misclassifications
  • Bat: A mammal (Class Mammalia), not a bird — despite flight, it has hair, mammary glands, and viviparous birth.
  • Whale, Dolphin, Seal: Mammals, not fish — warm-blooded, breathe via lungs (surface for air), give live birth, nurse young.
  • Penguin: A bird (Class Aves) that cannot fly but has feathers, beak, and lays eggs.
  • Platypus & Echidna: Mammals (Prototheria) that lay eggs — an exception to the "mammals give live birth" rule.
  • Frog vs Toad: Both Amphibia; frogs have smooth moist skin and are more aquatic, toads have dry warty skin and are more terrestrial.
  • Cold-blooded (Poikilothermic): Pisces, Amphibia, Reptilia — body temperature varies with environment.
  • Warm-blooded (Homoiothermic): Aves, Mammalia — maintain constant internal body temperature.
