Myanmar: The Gateway to the East

Myanmar is the only ASEAN country sharing a 1,600 km land border with India, making it vital for both "Internal Security" and "Act East."

  • Political & Diplomatic Engagements (2025–2026):
    • Diplomatic Representation (April 2026): MoS for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh represented India at the inauguration of Myanmar's new President, maintaining pragmatic bilateral links.
    • Bilateral Dialogue (November 2025): The 3rd Myanmar-India Bilateral Dialogue was held in Yangon, emphasizing border management, infrastructure connectivity, and regional stability.
    • Pragmatic Neutrality: India balances strategic relations with the ruling Military Junta (to counter Chinese presence at Kyaukpyu deep-water port and Coco Islands) with support for an inclusive, "Myanmar-led and Myanmar-owned" transition to democracy.
  • Humanitarian Assistance & Relief:
    • Operation Brahma (March 2025): India launched a major HADR mission following a severe earthquake in Myanmar, deploying rescue teams, medical supplies, and setting up a field hospital in Mandalay.
  • Connectivity & Trade Settlement:
    • Kaladan Multi-modal Project: Designed to link Kolkata with Sittwe Port (operationalized May 2023), then via the Kaladan River to Paletwa and road to Zorinpui (Mizoram). Road work remains stalled due to conflicts between the military and the Arakan Army.
    • India-Myanmar-Thailand Trilateral Highway: Fusing Moreh (Manipur) to Mae Sot (Thailand); severely delayed by civil conflict.
    • Rupee-Kyat Mechanism: Expanded the Rupee-Kyat Trade Settlement Mechanism (launched in 2024) to facilitate non-dollar trade in essential pulses, agriculture, and pharmaceuticals.
  • Border Security & FMR Suspension:
    • FMR Scrapped (February 2024): Officially suspended the Free Movement Regime (allowing visa-free crossing within 16 km).
    • Border Fencing: Approved complete fencing of the 1,643 km Indo-Myanmar border to prevent insurgent safe havens, narcotics smuggling (Golden Triangle), and unregulated Chin refugee inflows.
  • Soft Power & Cultural Ties:
    • Sarsobeikman Literary Centre (March 2026): EAM S. Jaishankar virtually inaugurated this Indian-funded cultural and literary center in Yangon to enhance historical and scholarly bonds.
    • Exercises: Joint drills like IMBAX (army) and IMCOR (coordinated naval patrol in the Andaman Sea) maintain operational coordination.
